Family Care Home Licensing 101

What North Carolina inspectors look for during your initial Family Care Home licensure visit, and how to pass on the first try.

A Family Care Home (FCH) in North Carolina serves up to six adult residents who need 24-hour supervision and personal care. Licensure is granted by the Division of Health Service Regulation after a successful initial inspection.

Building and life-safety Inspectors verify square footage per resident, bedroom occupancy, bathroom ratios, fire alarms, sprinklers where required, posted evacuation routes, and accessible exits.

Resident records Each resident chart must contain an FL-2, negative TB, current physician orders, MAR (Medication Administration Record), service plan, and signed admission agreement.

Staffing and training The administrator must meet state qualifications. Direct-care staff need Personal Care Aide training, medication aide certification where applicable, and documented in-service hours.

Operational systems Posted menus, food temperature logs, cleaning schedules, infection control supplies, and an active QA program are reviewed.

A pre-licensure mock survey prevents most first-visit deficiencies. We offer a Family Care Home startup package that walks you through every checklist.
