How to Pass Your Initial State Survey
A walkthrough of what to expect during your first home care or care home licensure survey and how to prepare.
Your initial survey decides whether you can open. Treat it like opening night, not a quiz.
Prepare a survey binder Tab every required document: license application, policies, staff files, training logs, QA plan, emergency plan, and contracts.
Mock survey Walk through the building with a checklist. Open every drawer. Surveyors will.
Staff readiness Caregivers should know: where the policy manual lives, how to report abuse, what to do in a fire, and where the emergency supplies are.
Day-of behavior Be calm, transparent, and never argue. If you do not know the answer, say so and produce documentation.
